Who are the Pasta Grannies?
We’re a team finding and filming real nonne across Italy, celebrating their stories and of course, their pasta!
We’ve been running on YouTube for roughly 10 years. And we’ve joined Substack to give you more written content, highlighted conversations, essays and long-form features, with all the latest updates from the pasta-loving community on here.
A brief history of Pasta Grannies…
It all started when I was doing some research on a book about Italian food (for someone else) when I noticed cooking skills were no longer being passed onto the younger generations. Grandmothers' cooking is the cornerstone of Italian gastronomy, but they are invisible — the ambassadors are chefs, who always say 'my nonna, mother, zia is my inspiration' but where are they? ‘Le nonne’, the grandparents, are the original food influencers of Italy. And I thought I'd put them centre stage!
Italian women (and men) these days are far too busy to spend time in the kitchen. Of course pasta making isn’t going to die out, but it increasingly is a commercial activity — for chefs, pasta shops and factories — rather an a domestic one. So I thought I’d celebrate these women and their skills by filming them.
Our Values
We care deeply about celebrating and preserving authentic Italian culture. It’s at the heart of what we do.
Our Grannies are very dear to us and we treat them and their families with the utmost respect and care during the shooting process and in the manner that we publish their cooking. We take great pains to select grannies and recipes that have been cooked and enjoyed over generations, and that reflect the local produce and traditions. We are champions of promoting slow food and the responsible sourcing of sustainable ingredients from local providers.
